Bonus Tracks:
13. Goody Two Shoes (7" version)
The first thing that struck me on hearing this, is how bloody
fantastic this sounds remastered! I've always favoured this
Chris Hughes version over the weaker (and slightly longer) album
version, and this pisses all over track 07. Marco's guitars are
crisp and delightful, and the bass on this track is superb, and I'm
not referring to Adam's bass playing.
Ant Lady's lyrics
14. Coup D'Etat (album outtake)
Left off the final
track listing for the original album's release and much improved from
the demo which appeared on AntBox
(as you'd expect). These drums are the same sound as the rest of
Bogdan's playing on this album. The horns threw me initially,
but have since grown on me.
Ant Lady's lyrics
15. Goody Two Shoes (demo)
If you've ever heard
the Wellesley Widows, you get a rough idea of how this sounds.
The only drums in this is a bass drum, but there's plenty of layered
vocals. Adam only sings the chorus line just three times in this
demo plus there's an unused verse as well.
Ant Lady's lyrics
When I stood there
laughing
So much you could choke
Write down their opinion, -pinion
Depending on a pound note, pound note
16. Here Comes The Grump (instrumental demo)
Arguably, Marco's best
guitar solo is on the album version of this song. So this demo
was eagerly anticipated. Recorded solely by Marco in his own
home, this doesn't differ too much from what we here on track 05,
except the guitar becomes heavier two thirds of the way through.
I love the way it falls apart right at the end.
17. Little Italy (demo)
As soon as those famous
two claps start this demo off, it's obvious this ended up as Man
Called Marco. Hopefully the sleeve notes will tell us how the
title managed to change? Lovers of Marco's vocal skills will be
saddened to hear there is no "hello", or "five foot sevens" from him.
There's also no whistles or Adam backing vocals (Also no vocals from
Mantra 2...strange that). It still retains that Western feel of
the album version on track 12.
18. Made Of Money (demo)
One of the infamous
Cardboard Box Demos, which has Adam playing the drums on cardboard
boxes. And he CAN play (on THIS demo, just). The intro
before the layered vocals is rather quaint. Again, it's nice to hear
this song without the horns.
Ant Lady's lyrics
19. Place In The Country (demo)
Another Cardboard Box
demo, but different to the one on
AntBox. This one features some truly awful drumming by Adam
and some piano, which he also plays. There's a "new" verse on
this too (below).
Ant Lady's lyrics
A lifetime of telling
you to stop your ways
I'm telling you baby I mean what I say
A lifetime of telling you to stop that jive
You'll find yourself outside!
20. And So You Shall (demo)
One of THE highlights
of the unheard songs on the CD. Lyrically it's about asking a
genie for wishes and features one or two lyrics we've heard before in
"I Win, Zulus" on
AntBox.
In fact I love these lyrics so much, I've reproduced some of the best
lines below.
Ant Lady's lyrics
I wish I wish that I
could make records so good
that people would
buy two instead of one in case
they damaged it and so replace
Wouldn't it be nice
if all
There were no journalists at all
"Good idea" I heard him say
"I bought my Beano anyway"
I wish I wish I wish
I wish
That nice young girls didn't smell of fish
I wish I wish that I could smile
Like a certain Terry Lee Miall
21. Yellowbeard (demo)
Marco had previous told
me that this was "shit", so I was so looking forward to this. It
so funny it's amazing. The piano intro is reminiscent of "March
Of The Mods". Then Adam does his best impression of some
seagulls and starts to sound like Blur in parts (even though this
pre-dates Blur). It's only 2:26 long and it leaves me gagging for
more. Perfect for a stage production of Yellowbeard! There
are some interesting tiny noises right at the end of each of the
opening bars that sound as if they were edited or looped, but maybe
it's just me.
Ant Lady's lyrics
22. I Know They Know (demo)
You wouldn't think was
an Ant track from this drum machine intro! Almost like late 80's
house music. But that's where the similarity ends. Sadly
that's where this demos appeal ends for me. Lots of "ooh's"
and that mouth-clicking that Adam tends to do from time to time, but
this chorus is annoying!
Ant Lady's lyrics
23. Gargoyles Are Go (demo)
This is about Adam's
dislike for drunkards, presumably. When this started I thought it the
intro was from a demo "5 Guns West" (but that's on Redux). The
intro also reminded me of the intro to a song by Slik called "Forever
And Ever" (an old Midge Ure band). Vocally though, I could
imagine this sitting alongside songs like "Rubber People". For some
insane reason I keep singing "Batman" over the guitars. At the
end, a drum machine starts an different rhythm which is quickly faded
out (pity).
Ant Lady's lyrics
24. Good Sex Rumples The Clothing (unused b-side)
This was recorded in
one evening along with Juanito The Bandito and Why Do Girls
Love Horses, but was forgotten about....until now. Talk about saving the best for last!
After struggling to manage with the Bedroom Demo (Chelsea Tapes) of
this for so long, it is now possible to understand what Adam's saying!
It has a similar feel to "Juanito The Bandito" and "Why Do Girls Love
Horses?" and sounds a little oriental. A true gem!
Ant Lady's Lyrics

Carty Notes:
The first thing that stands out on this release is the additional 12
bonus tracks. In effect, two albums worth on one CD.
A surprise inclusion for me is the Chris Hughes produced seven inch version of Goody Two Shoes. Even though the drums (also by Chris Hughes) are more poppier than the version which ended up as track 7 of this album, seeing it here raises another question. Why didn't the 7" version of
Stand And Deliver make it onto the
Prince Charming remastered CD? Maybe the compilers are now trying to include the single versions on these releases? In which case, I eagerly look forward to the
Wonderful
Remaster! (Yes, I am hinting when Andi, Mark and Marco read this.)
Four demos from the album also make it here, namely Goody Two Shoes, Made Of Money and Place In The Country. The latter 2 featuring Adam on drums (also known as the cardboard box demos as that's what he played the drums on!!).
Because it features piano it is NOT the same version as on AntBox. Here Comes The Grump also appears in demo form, but as an instrumental, which was recorded by Marco in his home.
If all that isn't enough we are then blessed with 5 never before heard demos, Little Italy (a demo of Man Called Marco), And So You Shall, Yellowbeard (I suggest you read my interview with Marco for his comments in this demo), I Know They Know (previously listed here as "They Know I Know") and Gargoyles Are Go.
Two more tracks worthy of a mention here is an completely finished album version of Coup D'Etat, which is NOT the same version as the one on
AntBox as it features a horn section. It was dropped from the album at the last minute. Then the jewel in the crown is the re-recording of an old Adam tune that was intended for a b-side, Good Sex Rumples The Clothing. This has only ever been heard as part of Adam's Bedroom Demos (Home Demos) from the Chelsea Tapes. Let's hope the original demo makes it on the
Demos Box Set currently in production.
