DIGITAL TENDERNESS - A VIDEO HISTORY
the withdrawn Ant DVD compilation in
Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound

WITHDRAWN SEPT 2006

Digital Tenderness - A Video History 1977 to 1996, by Adam Ant/The Ants was to be officially released as the new Adam And The Ants greatest hits DVD around the time of Adam's autobiography.

The release date had been announced as September 18th 2006, but on August 28th it was announced that due to a "licensing issue", the DVD had been cancelled.   The rumour mill suggests Adam was advised to object to the pre-Sony videos for "image" reasons, other sources say it was solely Adam's decision.  However Sony's plan to release a double DVD, Stand & Deliver, on December 11th 2006 now puts this compilation up on the shelf with Adam's Persuasion album - never released.

This withdrawn DVD had 31 tracks (initially 34) all remixed in 5.1 surround sound, including some footage which would have been seen for the very first time.  Such as:

  • The Ants' performance of Plastic Surgery in the white room which appeared in a TV screen in the 1977 movie Jubilee.

  • Laurie Rae Chamberlain's live film footage newly re-edited to the Dirk Wears White Socks demo.

  • Stephanie Gluck's Cartrouble video made for Malcolm McLaren.

  • Stephanie Gluck's Tabletalk video made for Malcolm McLaren.

  • Zerøx video, visually re-edited to match the soundtrack due to the tape stretching.

  • The Idea performed live at the Odeon in Lewisham, 1980.

(The above 6 tracks now remain unseen, although the Stand & Deliver DVD is said to contain the Laurie Rae Chamberlain footage with Zerox used as the soundtrack as opposed to the Dirk Wears White Socks recording.)

  • The alternative Kings Of The Wild Frontier video, shot from different angles.

  • The BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test footage of Ants Invasion and Killer In The Home. (removed at a very early stage)

  • Prince Charming with a new PC Revue intro and Marlon Brando ending.

  • Single and extended edits of Room At The Top and Rough Stuff.

  • Single and the EPK interview versions of Wonderful (dropped very early on).

The DVD, as with the other remastered CD's and box sets, has been compiled by Marco Pirroni, Andi Vaughan and Mark Alleyne, and promised to be the definitive Ants video collection. Only Stand And Deliver, Puss 'N Boots, Goody Two Shoes and Wonderful ever appearing on DVD compilations before, means this would have been a first for Ants on film on this format.

Copies of the DVD before it was withdrawn have turned up in very limited instances.  One is an early track listing featuring the Wonderful EPK track, one almost complete but missing the Lewisham Odeon performance of The Idea, and another featuring the finished 31 tracks marked below with an asterisk*.

One web site (eil.com) advertised this DVD with a complete track listing that omitted the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test performances of Ants Invasion and Killer In The Home.  In anticipation of that page being removed, I have recreated on this site (without permission).  Just click HERE.

Below is just a part of what the back would have looked like:
