EBAY
GIG POSTERS CONFIRM 'UNKNOWN' ANT
GIG

Ant News
- The posters recently put up for auction on eBay have now been confirmed
as genuine by the seller himself. This now means that Adam and his
entourage flew to Spain in August 1985 for this one off concert
prior to the start of the Vive Le Rock Tour,
which began over two weeks later.
The seller, Lesley Morrall, contacted me to
put the record straight following my doubts of the posters' authenticity on
this very page two weeks ago:
|
I used to
work for Adam as his wardrobe/production secretary
in the 1980's. I have been selling off all my music
memorabilia that I had collected over many years working in
the music industry with many different bands.
We did a gig on the 23rd August at the Marbella Bull
Ring, I have just found an old diary and checked. It was
in 1985. We flew to Marbella on the 22nd August at
1:40pm and arrived at the Andalucia Plaza Hotel at 3pm
Spanish time. We went into Puerto Banus that evening
for a meal. On the day of the show it was a 7pm get in
(according to my diary) and we were supposed to be on stage at
12:30am but actually came on stage at 1:45am, we arrived back
at the hotel at 4am. The next day 24th August, we flew back to
England on BA475 flight at 8:30pm it was late and we actually
departed at 1:45am arriving at Gatwick at 3am (Our time).
I remember vaguely the gig, because the backstage area was
where the Bulls were kept and the matadors, it smelt pretty
bad and with the heat even worse.
Nothing I am selling on e-bay is a fake or not authentic, I am
not out to rip anyone off, I was going to throw all the stuff
out as it was taking up space and somebody suggested selling
it, hence I went onto e-bay. It has been great fun selling all
this stuff and talking to a lot of people from the past and
genuine fans and it has been nice to know that all these items
have gone to a good home. |
There were three posters auctioned and the
last green one is due to end on
eBay this very night. Lesley states in her auction that it will be
posted to the winning bidder in a cardboard tube, so none of those ugly creases!
I'd like to personally thank Lesley for the above
information and making these great items available to the fans. Happy
bidding!

NEW
MERRICK PRODUCED/DRUMMED
WOLFMEN TRACK

Marco/Merrick/De Niro News
- A third Wolfmen track is now available in the downloads section
of their site
thewolfmen.net. It's a cover version of the Brian Eno track
Needle In The Camel's Eye and is produced by Chris 'Merrick'
Hughes, who also plays drums on the track. (This follows the recent
news broken on this site of a track by Mantra II,
Angels Are Forever, featuring Marco on guitar and Terry Lee
Miall on drums.)
The Wolfmen track promises to be just one of
a number of collaborations with Chris Hughes featured on the forthcoming
album, Modernity Killed Every Night. When asked to describe
the track in two words, Marco said simply, "Remake, remodel..."
The band promise that "another collaboration, this time between The
Wolfmen and "THE New York legend" appears next month...".

REAL OR FAKE?

Ant News
- Two almost identical posters claiming to be from an Adam Ant gig
(of which there is no listing) have turned up on eBay. The first
item's auction ended yesterday (March 26th) and sold for a whopping £
26 (€ 38, $ 45). Just as that bidding came to end, the same seller put
a second poster from the same gig up for auction. The only
difference between the two is that one has green
shading and the other has pink.

The auction closing date for the
pink poster is Sunday 2nd April.
According to listings on this site's Ant
Gigs Page, there were no concerts between May 1984 and
September 1985. The date given for the poster is August 23rd 1985
although seller cannot confirm the year in the details of the second poster.
It is claimed to be from a gig played at Plaza de Toros, in Puerto
Banus, Spain.
My question is, are these two posters real...or
money making fakes? If you have any further details, please
email me with confirmation (as if the posters aren't enough!).

ANT DVD
DATE WITHDRAWN

Ant News
- SonyBMG have no release date for the new Ant DVD,
Digital Tenderness, although they have told me that it has not
been taken off the release schedule. The long awaited DVD was expected to
be released this month, but its failure to show up for pre-release on Amazon
has raised suspicions amongst some fans.
Earlier this week I was informed by a good source
that due to management changes it had been removed from their release
schedule. Both Marco and Sony/BMG confirmed the change in
personnel but denied its removal from the list. No other official
information is available at this time, which leaves me free to speculate.
;-)
Has it been put back to coincide with the Adam
autobiography, Stand & Deliver, and the Ants Demo Box Set
(which is to be released through Decca)? Maybe SonyBMG feel they
would maximise on sales if the releases were coincided? I guess the debate
will continue. But for now, if anyone asks, there is no release date
(yet).

UK AGENCY SIGNS
ANTFLAVOUR

Ant News
- UK Ants tribute band Antflavour have been snapped up by a top
artists' agency I can exclusively reveal. The agreement could result in
gigs around the UK bringing the flavour of Antmusic back to the live
circuit. Front man Simon Clarke tells in his own words how the
events unfolded:
"About a
month ago, I was approached by an agent from top UK agency
Peller Artistes Ltd, who said they were keen to add
an Adam & The Ants tribute to their roster, so I sent
them an audio CD with two live songs on it and a CD with
some photos, which they had requested. They called me on the
day it arrived at their offices, having already listened to
the tracks. They asked if the band and myself would audition
for them. A couple of phone calls later (to the band) I was
arranging the date of the audition.
We did the
audition last Thursday (15th February) in Sheffield.
We did three songs, Stand & Deliver, 'Antmusic'
and Goody Two Shoes. We were then invited up to their
offices for a chat, the end result is that they wish to
represent us, of course, we have agreed to this and the
agency are starting to get things moving forward for us.
A number
of venues and nightclub chains have been mentioned, so
hopefully, Antflavour will start getting regular work
around the UK!
I feel
this is a big step forward for Antflavour, as once
the work starts to filter in, we will be on the professional
circuit with many fine pro tribute acts. The hard work
starts now, and hopefully this will make it easier for Ant
fans to see us live."
|
Judging from the three track promotional DVD he sent
me, it's obvious the energy Simon exerts on stage will be a major player in
their future successes - much in the same way that that Adam himself performed.
You can download an mp3 of their live version of Cartrouble from
their site.
I can also reveal that Simon will also be performing
one Ant tune in a solo performance for charity at a new venue called "Plug" in
Sheffield on Tuesday 28th March. The Stars
In Their Eyes style event is raising money for the Marie Curie cancer
charity. He says:
|
"The idea is that I get sponsorship to
perform. I did the same for them in March 2004 and managed to
raise £300, so they've invited me to take part
again and I'm very flattered to be asked. The last one I did was a
very enjoyable night for myself and everyone else involved, plus the
audience were fantastic!" |
So, we expect to hear news of how to sponsor
Simon as soon as the sponsorship forms arrive. Hopefully we can help raise
more than the £300 he raised two years ago.

ANT LIB 2006
EVENT DATE CONFIRMED

Ant News
-
Madam Stan has confirmed that this year's annual Ant event in London
will take place on Saturday November 4th. She is quoted on the
Ant Lib Forum as saying, "there will be a couple of warm up events on
Adam's birthday too which I'm working on" which falls the day before.
The event remains unannounced but it has been booked.
Hopefully this event will clash neatly with the releases of
Adam's autobiography, Stand & Deliver, and the
Ants demos box set. This event is expected to
blow the pants off last year's Ant Lib Disco as
Ant fans from America are destined to invade by the plane load (a slight
exaggeration, but it sounds great!).

MANTRA II
ALBUM DATE

Catboy does not feel a right tit, but she does.
Mantra II News -
UK band Mantra II have announced that their new album, featuring no less
than four ex-Ants, is due for release in May 2006. The album, which
has no announced title as yet, has just two more tracks to finish before final
mixing and mastering begins. It is hoped that Kevin Mooney will
play bass on one of these, and it is believed that Marco is collaborating
in the other track. Although that's just my educated guessing for now.
As we reported
here in November, Terry Lee Miall and Chris (De Niro) Constantinou
also appear, as does a certain Welsh remixer, who has remixed the anthemic
(Chant) Mantra II, which originally appeared on their first album
This Is Called Fantasy. Marco and Chris appear as The
Wolfmen on Werewolves Of London.
I have been lucky enough to hear a few of the tracks
due on the new album and in my opinion, Mantra II have taken a huge leap
forward both musically and lyrically. The Mantra II site promises to
releases a track listing in the next few weeks, which will be followed up with
intensive promoting with the UK national press.
Here's the band's latest press release:
|
"Werewolves
of London" was initially going to be a single, but the
project has snowballed over the last 12 months with on-going
work on the animated feature, and many other factors:
Instead of just waiting around, Catboy & Double G
continued to work on new material. Soon it seemed more prudent
(not to mention cost effective!) to make it the follow-up
album.
Also during this time they have strengthened links with
Catboy's childhood heros "The Ants." With
contributions from Terry Lee Miall (who, of course,
played drums on both of "Adam & The Ants" huge early
eighties albums: "Kings of the Wild Frontier" & "Prince
Charming."
Also there will be new guitars from Maestro & Punk Legend;
Marco Pirroni, and (possibly) some bass from Kevin
Mooney. ("Kings of The Wild Frontier")
We will release a probable track listing in the next couple of
weeks.
We expect to start working with the national (UK) press in the
next month, with some early sample track reviews etc. We will
let you know when publications are due out.
Until then it's all studio work, with two tracks left to
complete, followed by a lot of mixing and mastering. We're
very excited at the prospect of the end product.
**Additional - Mantra II producer and lead guitarist
DOUBLE G is now also working on his first SOLO project,
which will be released through ALEXA later this year.

THE WOLFMEN
HAVE ARRIVED

Sleep with one eye open
Marco News -
After years of whisperings and howling, The Wolfmen are finally coming to
life. Marco Pirroni and Chris Constantinou have been
recording demos for the past two years, and they are about to take on the world
with a new album and single almost in the can, not to mention
making music for TV ads all across the globe and the musical score for a
TV programme to be aired in the UK on satellite TV this month! And if
that isn't enough, we're also treated to a new website and a Wolfmen
blog, which describes them as:
| "...where The Velvet Underground,
T-Rex, Adam & The Ants and Martha Reeves & The Vandellas are
plundered to make retro rock and roll for the 23rd century…" |
.

Found in a bookstore in Hay-On-Wye
The album is to be called Modernity Killed
Every Night and is rumoured to contain tracks entitled, All
Nighter, Bring It On, Do The Ostrich,
Hymn To Beau, Modernity Killed Every Night, Needles
and Zip Gun, none of which have been confirmed. Some of the
album's track have been produced by Chris Hughes and a single is also
reported to be on the way. It is believed The Wolfmen releases will
not be on Marco's Only Lovers Left Alive label.
In a soon to be published interview for this site,
Marco said of the album:
|
We started doing it with no clear intention of what it was
supposed to be. Well, creatively we knew what it was
going to be, but no clear intention of what we were going to
do with it. Nowadays, particularly for us, an album in
the shops of men at our stage of life, as we're not going to
tour it and we're not really going to promote it... It's
sort of pointless really. So we've decided to go a
different route. We have tried to do tracks for films
and TV programs. Because we figured if we can get the
right track in the right movie at the right time, that's
really a single release. And there would be a video to
go with that that fits in with the movie because we don't want
to be in the video. |

Meanwhile, they have been recording music for
numerous TV ads for huge companies like Rimmel (above), featuring Kate
Moss but shelved following her recent bad press, Sanex, and Heineken
in the US.

Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough
And if you want to hear The Wolfmen before
all the above is available then tune into UK satellite channel Bravo on
Tuesday 7th February at 10PM. The documentary I
Predict A Riot features their soundtrack. The show initially went
by the name Do The Riot Thing, and includes some superb footage of
clashes filmed around the world during some of the most violent riots seen.
The producer approached Marco at short notice to record the music, giving him
just one month to complete it.

7th Feb 10pm
(More details on all of the above will appear in the
4th excerpt from my interview with Marco later this week. In the meantime
here's a sneak preview of clips from the TV show I Predict A Riot)

"Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!"
Ant
News - A cover version of 'Antmusic' which was
first revealed on this site in April 2005 has been featured in a episode of US
TV show The O.C.. It is not known to what extent the
Hyper version of the song is used, but it is featured in an episode called
The O Sea, which is episode 23 of the 2nd series. This particular
episode features
George Lucas as himself (so it seems).
London radio station XFM has also featured
the Live At Cargo mix in their show The Remix on Jan 15th

copies of it. But that's credited to "Ant Music" by Hyper

MR & MRS CHRIS 'MERRICK'
HUGHES ON TV SHOW

Mrs Merrick, Betsi (right)
Hughes News -
Ex Ants drummer/producer Chris Hughes and his wife Betsi feature
in two episodes of Channel 4 Television's Risking It All.
The programme centers around Betsi and her business partner Colette and their
dream to set up their own business in Bath.
They both have to find the cash to buy the premises
and whilst Colette re-mortgages her house, Betsi turns to her husband, Chris,
for the money. The programme features plenty of Betsi and shots of her
rather splendid house in Bath. There are also clips of Chris at work in
his studio in the first programme but I can't yet confirm if he appears in the
Risking It All Revisited episode. The business is called
Green Street House and is the "perfect place to take time out for
yourself. It’s peaceful, tranquil surroundings and holistic beauty treatments
encourage relaxation and balance that will nourish your mind and soul as well as
your body."
Both clips are viewable on the Channel 4 site
(links below).

Betsi used to be the lead singer of Propaganda
on their Chris Hughes produced album 1234 in the 1990's.
Two singles were released featuring her vocals, Only One Word and

PRODUCING Ms DICKSON

This is not Amanda Holden
Hughes News -
Chris has been busy producing Barbara Dickson's brand new album due in
March 2006, which is a collection of Beatles' love songs with guest
vocalist, Midge Ure.
Barbara's 1986 duet with Elaine Paige, 'I
Know Him So Well', from the musical 'Chess', reached
number one in the UK singles' chart.
Away from the pop treadmill, she diversified more and more into acting with
parts on radio and television, including a guest role in popular crime series, 'Taggart'.
In 1995 she accepted the role of Anita Braithwaite in the gritty TV drama series
'Band Of Gold', about the lives of a group of Bradford prostitutes
and the role won Barbara universal acclaim. The show went on to run for three
highly successful seasons.

NEW COVER VERSION OF
MAN CALLED MARCO

Have guitar will travel
Ant News - A new
cover version of the Ant/Marco tune Man Called Marco has been
recorded and made available online by
Ligotage guitarist
Ciaron. He's called the track Man Called ??? and links
to the mp3 were posted on the Ant Rap forum and on this site's very own forum.
Ciaron commented, "There's about 7 or 8 tracks of guitar (maybe 9) and the
bass guitar, which were all played by me. The drums I programmed on a drum
machine, the remaining tracks were programmed using samples of the particular
instruments (violin & flute)."
I sent a copy of the track to Marco who has
since suggested Ciaron and I try another version of the track from a totally
different angle, supplying a freshly recorded sample of him on guitar.
This is in its infancy, but I will keep you updated if it develops into a new
track.
Ciaron is no stranger to strumming Ant tunes out on
his guitar, as the picture above was taken at Ant gathering in London's
Euston Flyer pub, the night before the Ant Lib Disco.
Meanwhile, Ligotage are scheduled to perform their first gig on
January 28th 2006 at the Graffiti Club in Burnley (UK),
supporting Kings Of The Delmar. They are playing a 14 song set, all
of which is pre-Kings material.

Adam & the Ants from Chicago
Ant News -
Snippets of two sought after cover versions of Young Parisians and
Lady were recently rediscovered online. In 1998, Chicago
singer Scott Gibbons formed Adam & The Ants and released a single
of the two songs, limited to just 100 copies.
The band performed as the Dirk line up with an
additional member playing the part of Jordan. It is thought that
this site has been mentioned online before, but I thought it was well worth a

PUSS 'N BOOTS
12" MIX
ON DJ ONLY CD BOX

Disc 1 of 4
Ant News - The
original 12" extended version of Puss 'n
Boots has turned up on CD for the first time ever. The mix,
produced by Phil Collins and Hugh Padgham, failed to
appear on the remastered edition of the Strip
album and has only ever been given a full release on 12" vinyl.
Officially, that is still the case, as the 4 CD box
set, The 12" Box: 80's, is only available to bona fide DJ's and members
of the UK's Music Factory DJ service. It costs £35 and is
NOT available in the shops (although you may be able to buy a copy from DJ
equipment websites if you look hard enough).
I should add that I cannot confirm that this
recording is from the original master tapes as Music Factory have been known to
source some tracks from the vinyl originals in a few cases in the past.
