Who is Carty?
Is that his real name? Why "Carty"? How did the Carty remixes start? Will the Carty Mixes ever be released? Does Adam know about the Carty Mixes? What software does he use for the mixes? How long does it take to make a mix? How do I get to hear the mixes? How do I submit a misheard Ant lyric? Is your list of Ant gigs complete? Who is Carty? He's a Welsh guy born in Newport, Wales in July 1966. He currently lives The Netherlands. Is that his real name? No, although he has 'adopted' the name Carty Rubble for Internet use (no relation to Barney Rubble). In fact, so many Antpeople call him Carty, that he's more than happy to stick with it for those purposes. Why "Carty"?It's short for Cartrouble, a song by Adam And The Ants. The nickname goes back over 20 years! Back in the early 80's, CB radio (citizen's band) was all the rage, even though it was illegal at the that time. All CB users would have a 'handle' (nickname), and Cartrouble was chosen as that was the title of the first record he bought. Back in 1981 a punk (whose handle was 'Sid Vicious') once tricked Carty into singing Part 1 of the song over the airwaves and recorded it! When Carty discovered the Ant Lib's forum at Delphi in 1999, he needed a username. Seeing as there were a number who chose Ant song titles, it seemed logical to revert to Cartrouble, which Madam Stan shortened to Carty, and the name stuck. How did the Carty remixes start?Well firstly, he's spent over 13 years as a DJ and ten years as a radio presenter, so music has featured very strongly in his life. When Malcolm McLaren released Buffalo Gals in 1983, Carty was hooked on scratching (regularly using his parent's turntable to practice on!!). Being a DJ was his dream. During some free time in a radio studio in 1987, he tried his hand at mixing records together. As he improved, he started to recorded them onto audio cassette (tape). After landing DJ residencies at two South Wales night clubs, he continued to tape his performances, striving to improve every week. It was only until 2001 did Carty spot some DJ mixing PC software on sale in a computer games shop (Dixons). He bought it immediately and his first Ant remix was born - a Funky Drummer based remix of Wonderful. This mix was featured on the ALF's MP3 Of The Week page, and eventually, as other remixes were born, they appeared on their own CD's. Since then he has worked with Marco Pirroni, Terry Lee Miall, Chris Constantinou with plans to work with Kevin Mooney in 2008. Will the Carty Mixes ever be released? The mixes are available for free download via this site (thanks to Seedy for hosting them). As for being released officially, Carty hopes not! He regards producing the remixes as "just a hobby" which he freely shares with those who wish to hear them. He would not want to release any of them in their current state and would insist in recreating them from scratch. DMC (Disco Mix Club) in the UK have used Carty mixes on their monthly DJ only CD's, and some have been featured on Dutch national radio station 3FM. Mantra II released a new Carty remix on their 2006 album, Werewolves Of London. Six other tracks on the album were also post-produced by Carty. Some of the Carty Mixes compilations and some other mixes can be purchased via the Carty Store. It must be stressed this is not for personal gain, yet as a result of increasing demand. Carty is currently working on his first promo album, which has the (working) title Manic In Boulangerie. Does Adam know about the Carty Mixes? That's doubtful as Adam has not made his online presence known, but his songwriting partner Marco Pirroni has. Marco sent an email to Carty after reading about Volume 1 on the ALF forum in 2002 and requested that he be sent a CD. Carty contacted Justin Swan (now of adam-ant.net fame) and asked him to burn a copy and design a cover. Sony/BMG were sent a couple of CD's in 2004 at hiss request. Since then Marco has worked with Carty on at least three Ant related tracks, namely Panzer Mädchen, Physical and Man Called Marco 2006 with Ciaron. Terry Lee Miall has heard them (according to his wife) and his drumming received the Carty treatment on the Mantra II CD, Werewolves Of London. Kevin Mooney has also received a sample CD of mixes and spins one or two whilst DJ'ing around London. He's also asked Carty to be involved in a track on his Lavender Pill Mob's third album in 2008. What software does he use for the mixes? It depends on the mix requirements, but those used to date are Traktor DJ, Dance Ejay 3, Remix, Reason, Cubase SX, Acid Pro, Wavelab and Ableton Live. More recently Carty has obtained Marco Pirroni's ProTools software and M-box hardware. How long does it take to produce a mix? That depends on the mix, but some have been done in one take (Puerto Rican), some in one night, and some can take weeks to finish! Nowadays, when a demo has been 'completed', it gets played continually so that any fine-tuning can be done before making the mix publicly available. So that can now run into weeks. How do I get to hear the mixes?Simple. Once you've located the mix you want on this site, click on the word DOWNLOAD and you will be taken to that track's download page at antfan.com. A simple log in is required and it is free and quick to register. Just left-click on the download icon (with the red arrow) and it will automatically start to download. Please download just one mix at a time. The server is likely to crash otherwise. Alternatively, you can hear the latest Carty Mixes on both his MySpace and Multiply pages. Furthermore some can be purchased in the Carty Store How do I submit a misheard Ant lyric?Preferably by email. Alternatively you may post on the Carty Inc Forum. All submissions should include not only your misheard lyric, but the correct one (if possible) and the title of the song it's taken from. Is your list of Ant gigs complete?Probably not, as new dates are being added regularly. If you've seen Adam live, please email the gig details, along with the date, year, venue, name of support act, set list, and any scans of ticket stubs, programmes and posters. All that isn't necessary, but the more info you have, the more complete the list. Over to you now! Is there something you would like to know about this site, the mixes or anything else? Please submit any questions to Carty by emailing him at carty@cartrouble.nl and your question could appear on this page. © Light Blue Car Productions 2000-2007
