Within Temptation - Ice Queen
Q-Tip - Breath & Stop (acappella)
Q-Tip - Breath & Stop (drums only)
In May 2003, DMC produced a mash-up of Michael Jackson's
Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Q-Tip's Breathe & Stop.
(Exactly 2½ years later, I make my debut on the DMC CD's with the Rachel
Stevens vs Adam Ant mash-up.) In April 2006, at a Dutch
computer company's games party, the Jacko vs Q-Tip two-tracker was blaring from
the sound system. What a mix!!
A quick chat about that track resulted in my need to use the former A Tribe
Called Quest rapper's vocal in a new mix. I wanted something with a
Dutch flavour and turned to my better half for suggestions...(I won't mention
which tracks ended up on the cutting room floor!).
The Dutch Goth rockers, Within Temptation, have been stealing air time on
the Dutch music TV channels with their powerful Ice Queen single,
so this seemed the best place to start. After having some serious timing
issues with the Q-Tip acappella (some nut has really screwed that up!),
and applying some emergency surgery, everything was beginning to fall into
place. The result is the 7 minutes and 14 second mix which takes pride of
place as track one on this WTF Volume 4 compilation.
After sending a copy of the mix to the computer company's employees it was
suggested that it be sent into the Friday afternoon mix (vrijdagmiddagmix)
slot on the Dutch national radio station 3FM. Seeing as they
only accept mixes under 4 minutes for inclusion in the program, some serious
editing would have had to take place. (My reputation for long mixes is
something I seem to be stuck with, so how was I to chop this mix in half?).
It must be said, it was painful, and a four minute edit was sent in to 3FM DJ
Paul Rabbering and the mix was played on his RabRadio show on
Friday 18th May 2007.
(For real!)

Kosheen -
Overkill [Acappella]
An Ant fan called Gemini Guy (who's real name is Graham)
suggested I enter a remix competition run by Kosheen's web site (www.kosheen.com).
Only Kosheen's acappella has been used from the original. The
rest is all me, as using samples was not allowed for the
competition. Spoilsports!
The original version appears on the news album, "Damage".TOP OF PAGE

Star Sisters -
Stars On 45 [intro]
Perez Prado - Mambo #5
Fun Boy 3 & Banarama - It Ain't What You Do [drums]
Christina Aguilera - Candyman
Abigail Mead - Full Metal Jacket
Andrews Sisters - Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (Of Company B)
Lou Bega - Mambo #5
Geoffrey Sumner - Stereo Sound Sampler [1958 LP]
Art Of Noise - The Army Now [intro sample]
An Ant fan called Sparky (who's real name is
Brian) suggested I do something with Christina Aguilera's "Candyman"
track. As you can see from the list above, there's quite a lot of source
material here. I have always thought that the Fun Boy 3 drums would go
with Lou Bega's "Mambo #5" and it seemed a good place to start after
Christina's track has a similar beat. The US Marine chant from "Full
Metal Jacket" also seems an influence to Ms. Aguilera.
This mix begins with the "...Bugle Boy"
horn section from the Star Sisters. They are a Dutch trio who sang the
vocals on the intros and outros of the "Stars On 45" singles from the
80's. It's from a medley of war time classics called, ironically, "Stars
On 45".
I chose to use the Perez Prado original of the "Mambo
#5" horns as it has an older edge which fits in with the Andrews Sisters'
sound. Right at the end of the mix is an Art Of Noise sample from "The
Army Now" track. It's a bit cheeky as they sampled the Andrews
Sisters in the first place!
And finally, tucked away with the Perez Prado
horns are some very, very rare samples from a 1958 stereo sampler LP.
You're probably familiar with the "This is a journey into sound" sample.
Well I've added some gems from that same recording never heard before.
(Not that you care)
A radio edit mix was sent to
Dutch station 3FM, however, Ms Aguilera's track was not on their playlist and
was therefore not suitable for their target audience.
