James Brown - Funky Drummer
(Bonus Beats) - Urban/Polydor Records Adam Ant - Wonderful (Bob Clearmountain's Unedited Mix) - EMI
When I first heard
Wonderful back in 1995, I always "knew" how great it would sound
with my fave drum loop, taken from James Brown's "Funky Drummer". Probably
the most over-used sample in musical history, but always has been a firm
favourite
since I started DJing in 1987. The closest I got to hearing Wonderful with this
beat was on a demo of the track. For this mix I recreated the Funky Drummer
loop from the original JB track, and selected Bob Clearmountain's Unedited
Mix, for it's superb post-production (compared to the LP mix), and of
course, it's full length. (You can hear James Brown at the fade out!)
Execution of the mix itself didn't take that long. This was the first time
I had been trying out a new PC software mixing package after many months of
frustration
in a radio studio! I kept it simple. A drum loop over another track. It took just 10
minutes! Initially I had used a "transformer" effect in the mix, but re-did it
as it "sounded crap"! Although I had to adjust the drum loop a couple of
times (if you listen carefully!) due to those real drummers who insists on not
keeping time! LOL!
This was just a test mix and decided, in my excitement, to tell all! That
same day, this remix appeared on the ANT LIB's
MP3
Of The Week page, much to my surprise and delight! (Many thanks to Madam
Stan for that one!).

ADAM AND THE ANTS - STAND

Bomb The Bass - Beat Dis
(Bonus Beats) - Rhythm King Adam And The Ants - Stand And Deliver (single
version) - CBS/Sony
This
happened totally by accident! I had done a demo remix of Persuasion with
a dub mix of Beat Dis by Bomb The Bass months ago, using a CD
player, a turntable and a tape recorder. Now I had this new mixing software, I
wanted to re-create this remix on the PC, but didn't have the right version of
Beat Dis!! Thanks to AudioGalaxy and many downloads later, I found it!
I created a new loop and thought, "this has the same pattern as the 'Stand And
Deliver' drums!". So I increased the pitch of the loop (from 114BPM to 143BPM!),
so that it was the same as Stand And Deliver's.
I then created some new loops using the Beat Dis drum with different segments of
Stand And Deliver: the guitar riff, the instrumental, and the "da diddley
qua-qua" part. Thanks to an answer for a cry of help from Ant Lady (and later,
Madam Stan), I was now able to edit all these bits together using a program
called GoldWave. This would have been a first for me to edit on the PC! (And if
you listen carefully, some of the edits are audible...which explains why this
remix has been remade from scratch: Stand And Deliver (Resurrection
Remix) on Carty Mixes Volume 7)
This is 9 minutes long and uses some cool effects with the guitar loops!
I was
going to add a sample of the guitar riff from Cartrouble at the end, as
the two mix well, but was glad to take the break!

Adam And The Ants - Kick!
(Cartrouble b-side version) - Do It Records Adam And The Ants - Kick!
(Antmusic EP version) - Do It Records
This
type of mix is called a 'two tracker', in that it uses two tracks combined to
make one. I used both versions of Kick! for this: the B-side of the
Cartrouble single, and the version taken from the Antmusic EP and
The B-sides single, both on the Do It label back in the 80's.
I initially attempted to mix these two using vinyl copies back in 2001, and
took the opportunity to update it for 2002. The strange thing about the Chris
Hughes produced version is that the tribal drumming parts are at a slower
tempo than the rest of the song! But luckily, both versions are close in tempo
avoiding any serious key clashes!
This took some editing and quite an number of re-runs trying to match up
those tribal drums over the top of the older version (with Dave Barbe's more
erratic drumming). I also took the opportunity to use, not just two verses of
the song, but double up with the different lyrics and create a four verse Kick!!
This mix has since been completely remade and can found on
Carty Mixes Volume 8 as Kick!

Adam And The Ants - Puerto
Rican (Peel Session) - Strange Fruit Records
This is
just simply an extended remix of the classic John Peel session track taken from
the Complete Radio 1 Sessions CD released in 2001. This was a spur of the
moment mix after a phone conversation with Millie (quiz hostess on the
ALF Forum on Delphi),
and completed that same night. It's her fave track and I thought I'd give it a
bash! This was done in just one take using loops to extend the non-vocal
segments of the tune. Simple but effective.

Adam Ant - Navel To Neck
(Strip CD) - CBS/Sony Adam And The Ants - 'Antmusic' - CBS/Sony Adam And
The Ants - Kings Of The Wild Frontier (single version) - CBS/Sony Adam And
The Ants - Kings Of The Wild Frontier (first version) - Sony
Navel
To Neck is my fave track on the Strip album, as I just dig those
Burundi drums! The idea of combining this track with 'Antmusic' and
Kings Of The Wild Frontier was just too irresistable to leave untouched!
Firstly, I created instrumental and vocal loops from Navel To Neck, 'Antmusic'
and both the single and demo versions of Kings. Eventually I had enough
material to edit together a new remix. The amount of material I left out of this
mix is amazing...for example, snippets from Mohair Lockeroom Pin-up
Boys!! Basically the whole mix either has the basic drum loop from
'Antmusic' running through it, or the Burundi beat from Kings...which kicks in
orgasmically!! I have decided to break down the mix below for those who wish to
know more about it: 00:00 - Navel To Neck intro 00:11 - "I wanna kiss you" sample 1 00:22 -

Parisians (7" version) - Decca Adam Ant - Crackpot History And The Right To
Lie (LP version) - CBS/Sony Adam And The Ants - 5 Guns West (LP version) -
CBS/Sony Adam Ant - Persuasion (LP version) - MCA
Another
spur of the moment mix that wasn't even planned! This idea evolved from trying
to explain to TexasAnt how an acappella of Eminem's "Real Slim Shady"
mixes over the instrumental to Britney Spears' "Oops! I Did It Again". The
thought of such a mix sounded "yuk" to her, until I suggested she downloaded it
from AudioGalaxy. She loved it! I explained that it could be possible to do
similar mixes with acappellas and, possibly, some Ant tunes. Although, there
aren't that many instrumental Ant tunes around!
I have many acappellas of top
tunes, but my most recent acquisition was Will Smith's Men In
Black. I knew that tune's tempo was 107 BPM (beats per minute), so I just
looked at my Ant BPM list for tunes around that speed and looked for the best
instrumental bits!
The first thing I noticed was that Puss 'n Boots
was very close to the speed of Men In Black, so I headed for the 12"
version and straight to the Phil Collins drum solo at the beginning. This
had to be the rhythm for the mix!
I then looped 2 bars of the PIB drums and
altered the pitch until it matched perfectly with MIB. All I had to do
now was match some Ant instrumentals of other tracks to the PIB drums. Over 15
Ant tunes were "demo'd" and that was whittled down to just 10, featuring at
least one from nearly every Ant album. I hope I didn't miss one out! (Full
studio albums only)
This was the first time I had ever tried this style of
mix, and although I was initially very pleased with the result, since replaying
it over and over, I have become a little less satisfied. Here's the full order of
tracks used for the mix, included how many bars of each were sampled:
Adam Ant - Puss 'n Boots (12") (drums only 2 bars)
Will Smith - Men In Black (acappella) (full vocal)
Adam And The Ants - Making History (LP) (intro 1 bar)
Adam Ant - Can't Set Rules About Love (LP) (intro 2 bars)
Adam Ant - Beautiful Dream (radio mix) (intro 2 bars)
Adam And The Ants - Family Of Noise (LP) (intro 1 bar)
Adam And The Ants - Killer In The Home (LP) (intro drums 1
bar)
Adam And The Ants - Young Parisians (7") (intro 2 bars)
Adam Ant - Crackpot History And The Right To Lie (LP) (intro 2
bars)
Adam And The Ants - 5 Guns West (LP) (middle section ½ bar)
Adam Ant - Persuasion (LP) (intro 2 bars)
On the whole, a
tough mix to edit, but in retrospect, I feels I should have stuck with just a
couple of Ant tracks as opposed to ten!

This
megamix had already been completed! It was initially done in a studio using 2
copies of the CD and 2 minidisc players. But because of limits on editing
capabilities, the final quality of the megamix is just not good enough! (Hence
my reason for purchasing the mixing software). The megamix includes all 11
tracks and has no extra loops or effects. It's just straight mixing from one
track to the other, adjusting the BPM as it progresses.
After many months of
frustration in the studio, the Persuasion Megamix is unveiled courtesy of
one long, late night on the PC! All eleven tracks from Adam's 1993 unreleased
MCA album are here, with each track getting at list two minutes exposure. The
tempo of the album tracks varies considerably and therefore some adjustments are
made to keep the smooth momentum throughout! A mammoth task, but very worthwhile! All we need
now, is for this megamix to give MCA a little persuasion to release the
album!
It's has few rough edges and that may result in a remake in the future, but for
now, that's all you get.
